By the Light of the Moon
Tyler is getting ready for tonight's full moon. He gives Mason another call - still no answer. A pretty blonde, Jules, overhears his message and starts to put the pieces together. She comes out to Mystic Falls looking for Mason. When Mrs. Lockwood finds out he is not in Florida like he was supposed to be, the sheriff officially makes Mason a missing person. In the ancient cellar ruins in the woods, Tyler preps his chains and forces down some wolfsbane water. Caroline is with him, and determined to stay as long as possible. She talks to him to take his mind off the transformation. When the pain becomes too intense, she strokes his hair. When the final stages of his transformation come, Caroline has no choice but to leave, no matter how much she wants to stay. When she returns hours later, all is quiet in Tyler's cell. She peeks in - he is still there, alive, and human. She cradles him while he weeps.
Bonnie joins forces with Luka to break the spell of the moonstone; however, it ends up being an illusion. He returns the moonstone to his father, then helps him with one more task for Elijah...Bonnie has placed a spell on Elena's house, preventing her from leaving. Unfortunately, it doesn't keep goons from getting in. Posing as a historian who is doing research on Mystic Falls, Elijah shows up and is invited in by Jenna, to loan him some of her sister's research. He returns to Elena's bedroom with some insight and a deal. He does not want Elena dead, nor does he want the vampire curse broken. He was once part of Klaus's inner circle, but when his obsession with the doppleganger turned him a little nutty, he cast Elijah out. Elijah doesn't want back in; he wants revenge. The plan is for Elena to live her life. When the time is right, he will use Elena as bait to draw Klaus out of hiding. He has witches at his disposal which will help keep Elena and her friends safe while he kills Klaus. Elena agrees, but on one condition: to let Stefan out of the tombs.
Not much interesting is going on in the tombs. That sex that Stefan and Katherine were having in the promos? Just a vision that Katherine forced into his head. Elijah comes down and informs Stefan that he has been freed - go talk to Elena, she will fill you in. Katherine, however, has not been freed.
Dig It or Bury It?
An intriguing episode, but it didn't stand out much one way or the other. Tyler's transformation seemed agonizing, but I needed a little bit less tears from him. Caroline and Tyler are obviously going to become romantic at some point, and I don't think Matt will take that well. There were some cheesy moments, like the scene with Bonnie and Luka casting their spell - it pretty much looked like witch sex. They were in a big circle of candles, and as they floated the moonstone above them, it shattered into a beautiful shower of fireworks. Nope, no sexual overtones there. Pretty much everyone got lucky tonight. I am still trying to decide if Luka is on his dad's side or not. I suspect that he started out there, but if he hasn't gone to Team Good(ish) Guys already, he will soon. Elena was whiny and mopey tonight, which is becoming a worrying pattern with her.
Blood Lust
Tyler's transformation was pretty excruciating. That boy can scream. Seriously, puts most Scream Queens to shame. His howls were just agonizing, and it was made worse because his entire transformation was sprinkled throughout the entire episode. You didn't see much visually, but the sound effects of bones breaking and popping out of joint were enough.
Myths Revamped
So in this mythology, werewolf bites are not lethal to vampires. However, it is doing something to Rose. Maybe she will become some insane mega-creature - a vampwolf.
Prophecies?
Vampire Diaries won't return from hiatus until January 27th. I never thought I'd say this, but I am starting to hate Christmas! My predictions... Jules is going to bring a posse of werewolves into Mystic Falls. Rose is going to mutate into some crazy mythical beast. Father and son will be pitted against one another when Luka refuses to do his father's bidding. Caroline and Tyler are going to hook up, causing Matt some fury. There is a good chance that Tyler will kill Matt, or at the very least, escape his chains and kill someone.

The Sacrifice
The Gilbert siblings jumped right into the fire with their plans to save everyone they loved. Elena (Nina Dobrev) enlisted Rose (Lauren Cohan) to offer herself up as the sacrifice so that Klaus would spare everyone she loved; and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) threw himself into Katherine’s (Nina Dobrev) evil clutches in attempt to save Bonnie’s (Katerina Graham) life as she tried to undo the tomb spell. But, in the end, all they accomplished was Stefan (Paul Wesley) getting trapped in the tomb with Katherine, and Elijah (Daniel Gillies) knowing exactly where to find Elena just as soon as Klaus got to town.
And something tells us that Klaus will not just want Elena. He is still going to want his sacrificial werewolf, witch and vampire in order to break the curse. Bonnie, Tyler (Michael Trevino) and perhaps Caroline (Candice Accola) are soon going to be roasting on the sacrificial alter along with Elena. Didn’t Elena remember what Katherine told her: the doppelganger alone is not enough? It is going to be all or nothing, and Klaus is going to want to kill them all. He has lived too long under the moonstone curse. He wants to be free to walk the earth and not worry about sunlight or werewolves. With that kind of incentive, bargaining Elena’s life for the lives of her friends is not going to work.So ultimately all Elena and Jeremy did was put them all in a more precarious position. Stefan is now stuck in the tomb with Katherine. Katherine got her heart’s desire — to have Stefan all to herself. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) got Elena — albeit not exactly as he foresaw for she is angry with him and still rejects him. But being her sole protector, no longer having Stefan hovering around to occupy Elena’s affections, has got to have some benefits. Jeremy has a nasty neck wound which is going to be nearly impossible to explain to Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning) or anyone else not “in” on the vampire secret. Caroline is being torn between her desire to be with Matt (Zach Roerig) and her desire to help Tyler. And Bonnie is figuring out that she is not as powerful as she thought and that, even with a warlock’s talisman as strength, she is not strong enough.
It is time for everyone to start trusting each other and working together to keep everyone safe. This “I will sacrifice myself to protect everyone else” mentality is remarkably short-sighted. Noble, romantic and brave — but still ineffective.
What Worked
Oh, let me count the ways to love this episode! First, the long, lingering, romantic looks between all the forbidden couples was heart-stoppingly beautiful. Whether it was Elena and Damon, Jeremy and Bonnie or even Caroline and Tyler, forbidden love was the most delicious flavor of the night.
For example, when Elena first said that she was worried that Klaus was going to kill everyone she loves, she looked pointedly at Damon — despite the fact that Stefan was standing right in front of her. Such action belies her true feelings. She did not ignore Damon as she made this declaration — she was looking away from Stefan, and directly at Damon. The attention of a girl in love never wavers. Yet Elena’s attention is definitely wavering. She is worried about protecting Damon. She worries that he will sacrifice himself for her and she would rather die, than let him die for her.
So when Elena angrily told Damon, “When have I ever made a decision? You and Stefan do that for me. Now this — this is my decision,” she was attempting to declare her love. Yet Damon stubbornly refused to hear what she was saying, so she raged, “You’re not listening to me! I don’t want to be saved — not if it means Klaus is going to kill every single person that I love.” This ambiguous language is not meant to be inclusive, rather it is used so that she does not have to identify who it is that she is protecting. The fact that Elena then tried to physically hit Damon to emphasize her point was even more telling. It is a thin line between love and hate. She does not hate Damon. She loves him enough to want to sacrifice herself to protect him. She even tried to strike him in her frustration. So when Damon icily told her to “never to do that again,” he was not referring to her trying to hit him — he was referring to her attempt to sacrifice herself for him.
Trying to explain, Elena softly told Damon, “I don’t question why you and Stefan and everyone else tries so hard to save me. You shouldn’t question why I should try to save you all of you.” Thus, later when Stefan entrusted Damon with the responsibility of keeping Elena safe, Katherine knowingly told Stefan, “That, right there, was the biggest mistake you’ve ever made.” For Katherine knows perfectly well how easy it is to fall in love with Damon. Without Stefan around as a reminder of why she chose him over Damon, Elena will be vulnerable to Damon’s charms. Plus, Elena is already too angry with Damon to justify indifference. She reacts to him emotionally and it will only be a matter of time before her anger turns to appreciation.
Also, with everyone is so worried about keeping each other safe, even Elijah could see that there was no need to fight with Damon. As he explained to Jonas (Randy J. Goodwin), “He’d die before he’d let anything happen to her. They both would. She’ll be kept safe. . . That is precisely what we need her to be: safe.” It is rather chilling to realize that Elijah is using Damon’s love for Elena — and perhaps ultimately her love for Damon — as a tool in his diabolical master plan.
Then, as to Bonnie and Jeremy, they were exquisitely agonizing as they continued their dance around each other. Jeremy may be willing to take the risk on love and declared how he feels; yet Bonnie still feels that it is wrong to fall in love with her best friend’s younger brother. However, if their scenes get any more smolderingly hot, her denials are going to become more futile. Additionally, Jeremy’s act of nearly sacrificing himself to protect her — to keep her from overexerting herself to undo the tomb spell — was a breath-taking declaration of love. Actions speak louder than words and Jeremy’s actions say that he is willing to die for her. What girl can resist that kind of chivalry and outright swoon-worthy love? If Jeremy could sweep a 140 year old vampire such as Anna (Malese Jow) off her feet, Bonnie has no chance. She too will ultimately succumb to that kind of powerful love. After all, Jeremy was willing to be trapped for eternity with a hungry vampire for her. If that does not scream love, then what does?
The third forbidden-love couple of the night was Caroline and Tyler’s growing closeness. With Caroline offering to be there to support him through this painful period of adjustment and his upcoming transformation, Tyler curiously asked her, “Why are you helping me? Why do you care? We’ve never been friends before.” Caroline then thoughtfully responded, “I don’t know. You just seem like you kind of need it. . . I was alone when I turned. I had no control over my body or my urges — and I killed somebody. I don’t want that to happen to you. I don’t want you to be alone.” Caroline may be only acting out of friendship, but the undercurrent of a frisson of chemistry between her and Tyler is palpable. Perhaps it is simply the heat of attraction between a vampire and werewolf, but they are likely to be caught up in that burning passion.
For as Tyler insightfully noted, it is difficult for Caroline and Matt to have a relationship given the barriers and undisclosed reality between them. So as Tyler gently told her, “It’s not really fair to be with someone and not really let them know who you are,” Caroline knew that he was right. No matter how much her heart yearns to be Matt, it may not be possible. She still poses a threat to him and brings a level of danger into his life that he does not deserve. So for Caroline, it is confusing as Tyler knows exactly what she is and accepts her. Tyler is also drawn to her and not afraid. That is a powerful intoxicant for a young teenage girl who is afraid of rejection.
Not to be left out of the love-fest, kudos to Matt for being a better man by apologizing to Tyler for initiating the fight at Tyler’s house. The look of pain and confusion on his face as he walked away shows that he is haunt by his unwilling participation in a night that ended with the death of a fellow classmate. Matt may not know how horrifically that night has cursed Tyler, but Matt still continues to feel the weight of his actions and how it resulted in an unintended death. It was also nice to see that Matt put aside his issues to go see Caroline at her home and try to make amends. By admitting that he missed her, he was opening himself up to loving her again. It was a brave and beautiful gesture. He also did not immediately back down once he saw that Tyler was there either. Matt may not understand everything that is going on, but he is willing to pursue what he wants and own up to his mistakes. He is turning out to be quite a man.
Last but not least, it was a pretty funny and cute scene with Alaric (Matt Davis) getting caught in his boxers holding a bowl of ice cream at Elena’s house. After nearly a year of dancing around a relationship with Jenna, it is nice to see that they have progressed to a good point.Then, after a rather dubious introduction, Luka (Bryton James) and Jonas are actually starting to appear somewhat sympathetic, like they may actually be good guys, and not the automatic bad guys we feared since discovering that Jonas is working with Elijah. Perhaps there are hearts of gold beating in those warlocks after all. Though it still remains to be seen.
What Didn’t Work
How dare they leave us hanging with the Matt-Caroline-Tyler scene as they all stood on Caroline’s front porch?! Surely, they could have given us a few more seconds to see if Tyler left or Matt left first. What is a new vampire to do when torn between the boy she loves and the werewolf who needs her? We are all dying to know!
Plus, if this is the last we are seeing of Rose, what an abrupt goodbye that was. She vanished as soon as she saw Elijah, abandoning the people she claimed to be helping. Her lack of back-bone is making her a rather pathetic vampire.
Finally, while warlocks apparently do not need an invitation to enter someone’s house, it was absurd that Jonas could pilfer so many of Elena’s personal items like she would never miss them. Like she would not notice the picture on her dresser was missing along with several key pieces of jewelry?!

Katerina
We sure hope Nina Dobrev got paid overtime for this week’s episode, which sees her play three different roles (kinda): Modern Day Elena, Modern Day Katherine, and Ye Olde 15th Century Katherine, AKA Katerina. But while Katherine’s backstory proved interesting enough (we’re waiting for the baby she birthed and relinquished in the 15th century to pop up again one of these days), this new subplot involving The Originals and the doppelganger sacrifice just keeps getting bigger by the week. But when will we finally meet Klaus?
Before “TVD” goes into a brief Thanksgiving hiatus (returning Dec. 2), it serves up a few new faces in the form of a vampire hipster nerd and a mysterious father and son duo with an unknown agenda. We learn that Klaus’s curse-breaking scheme might involve killing everyone and not just Elena, and that certain vampires have Twilight-esque special powers.
And for those of us so inclined, the show serves up a new potential love triangle AND a smattering of sexytime to tide us over during the break. It’s been so long since a Salvatore has taken his shirt off, we’ve almost forgotten what it feels like! Bear with the flashbacks as we sit through Storytime with Katherine and remember that there’s a light at the end of the episode, and its name is Ian Somerhalder’s Abs.

Bulgaria, 1490: Nina Dobrev is Katerina, who gives birth to a baby girl before her daddy takes it away and scolds Katerina for getting knocked up and bringing shame to the family.
Mystic Falls, Present Day: Elena has been summoned to the Salvatore Mansion to hear Rose share intel on the old timey vampires. Klaus is one of The Originals; Elijah was one of his foot soldiers. Yada yada yada, more stuff we already know. Rose thinks these old dudes are worth worrying about, but Damon and Stefan try to allay Elena’s growing fears that Klaus is now coming after her. “If you’re not afraid of Klaus, then you’re an idiot,” says Rose. Elena leaves for class because remember? She’s still in HIGH SCHOOL.
Over at Mystic Falls High, Jeremy and Bonnie are working on their budding romance. He kinda-sorta asks her out to play pool at the Grill after school and Bonnie agrees with some hesitation, since she’s still wrapping her head around the possibility of playing tonsil hockey with her best friend’s little bro. They’re interrupted by Luka, an attractive new kid who asks for directions and exchanges glances with Bonnie. Is there a love triangle in the making so soon for Jerennie?
Elena’s actually playing hooky from school today to secretly visit Katherine in the tomb to get answers about this Klaus guy, with Caroline along as her protection. Caroline muscles open the tomb door and a parched Katherine stumbles to the entryway, still trapped inside the doorway by Bonnie’s spell. Caroline reluctantly leaves the two in privacy and Nina Dobrev faces off against herself.
With Katherine weakened by thirst and trapped inside the tomb, Elena has the upper hand for once; she’s also got a bottle full of sweet, sweet blood to use as a bribe. Elena parses out a shot of blood and pushes it into the tomb, and Katherine starts talking.
Katherine’s history with Klaus dates back to England 1492, after her disapproving daddy kicked her out for being a slut. The baby was given away and Katherine was exiled to England, which is where she met Klaus – the first vampire of all-time history ever. When she found out the truth about him, she ran. Literally. Nina Dobrev is about to do a lot of running during this week’s episode.
FLASHBACK: “Katerina” flees through the woods, pursued by Klaus’s longhaired Number 2, Elijah. (Side note: Elijah sounds rather English to my ear, but is played by Canadian born-New Zealand raised actor Daniel Gillies, AKA Rachel Leigh Cook’s husband.) Elijah and his vampire goons are distracted by Trevor, Elena’s ill-fated vampire kidnapper from last week, who helps Katerina escape therefore incurring Elijah’s wrath for the next 500 or so years.
CUT TO PRESENT DAY IN THE TOMB: Katherine reveals that Klaus wanted to do to her exactly what he wants to do to Elena – sacrifice her and drain her blood to break the vampire curse.
Over at the Salvatore Mansion, Damon and Rose trade friendly barbs. He teases her for being sad over Trevor’s death; she ribs him for being in love with Elena. Damon wonders how Rose got in touch with Klaus, and she name drops yet another new vampire we have yet to meet: “A guy named Slater in Richmond.” (A guy named Slater, Rose? Is his first name, perhaps, A.C.??? We can only hope.)
Caroline catches up with Stefan, who’s on his way to check on Elena since he’s the kind of boyfriend who notices when you don’t show up at school. BECAUSE HE KNOWS WHERE YOU ARE AT ALL TIMES. Caroline confesses that she told Tyler the truth about her vampireness, which will piss Damon off.
Back at the tomb, Elena feeds Katherine more blood and finds out that Klaus wants a Petrova sacrifice because the original vampire curse was bound with Petrova blood and magick likes things to come full circle. The doppelganger was created, Katherine explains, as a way to break the spell -- like breeding clones to harvest organs. (Will clone-doppelganger Elena go all ScarJo in The Island or Carey Mulligan in Never Let Me Go?)
FLASHBACK: Katerina is STILL running through the forest. She comes to the cottage that Trevor directed her to and finds Vampire Rose and an older human maid lady under Rose’s control. Katerina has the moonstone in her possession, which she stole from Klaus before he could use it and her in the sacrifice ceremony. Rose schools Katerina on Klaus, telling her that nobody escapes from him. She locks Katerina in a room and plans on turning them both in that night.
PRESENT DAY: Rose takes Damon to Slater, the vampire at the bottom of the chain of command who can get a message to Klaus. Incidentally, it’s gonna be so hot when Rose and Damon get around to hooking up. They take the back entrance into a hip coffee shop with tempered windows (read: safe from burny sunlight) and meet Slater – a young-looking, scruffy, V-neck t-shirt wearing hipster dude who’s decidedly not the Slater I’d hoped for. Slater’s a bit of a vampire history buff; he knows the details of Damon’s 1864 transformation by heart, which is sort of like a total stranger knowing when you lost your virginity to whatshisname/whatshername back in high school.
FLASHBACK: Katerina has stabbed herself rather than return to Klaus. Rose, however, is determined not to let her just kill herself, and feeds her vampire blood to Katerina to heal her. NOW THERE’S VAMPIRE BLOOD INSIDE OF KATERINA! Trevor arrives just in time to admit to his BFF Rose that he loves Katerina, and if helping her angers Klaus then so be it. Katerina escapes and hangs herself in the next room, triggering her own transformation; knowing that Klaus would need to sacrifice a human Petrova doppelganger, she knew if she was a vampire she’d be free.
When Katerina wakes up newly vampirized, Rose and Trevor realize they’ve both been used. Rose attempts to stake Katerina but the wily newborn escapes after halfheartedly apologizing. Present day Elena chastises Katherine for ruining Rose and Trevor’s lives, but Katherine explains that she was and will always just look out for numero uno. Could Elena ever make the same choice?
Stefan and Caroline bond over salads at the Mystic Grill, which helps stave off Caroline’s “killing people” hunger. Stefan promises not to tell Damon that Caroline spilled the beans to Tyler, and admits that Caroline reminds him of his dead best friend, Lexi.
Over at another table, Bonnie runs into new kid Luka, who introduces her to his father, Dr. Jonas Martin. They’re from Louisiana, but OF COURSE Dr. Martin recognizes the Bennett family name… from his research in Salem, Massachusetts.
Damon and Rose catch Slater up on the latest happenings: Trevor’s dead, Elijah’s dead (NOT!), etc. Slater, it turns out, is a major nerd who’s taken the chance to use eternal life as an extended college term, collecting degrees left and right. Because he’s Mr. Smartypants, Slater knows how Damon and Rose can contact Klaus: Through Craigslist! There’s just one problem. Slater’s vampire phone tree ended with Elijah, who’s the only person that can actually reach Klaus. D’oh!
Well, there’s good news and there’s bad news. The good: Elijah’s alive, because he’s outside the café playing with some loose change. The bad: Elijah’s alive. And he’s not happy.
You know who is happy? Jeremy. At least until Luka crashes his billiards date with Bonnie and makes it three’s company. Elsewhere, Stefan knows that Caroline’s hiding something else. Thanks to the “girlfriend code,” Caroline isn’t talking. Sisters before misters!
Thanks to her own sense of self-preservation, Katherine’s not being too chatty, either – but she confirms what Elena guesses: That she came to town to hand Elena over to Klaus herself as a peace offering and used Mason to get the moonstone. Katherine also needed a werewolf (Tyler), a witch (Bonnie), and a vampire (Caroline) to sacrifice to Klaus.
Over at the nerdiest coffee shop in town, Slater tells Damon that if a vampire breaks the Sun/Moon curse, the werewolves are stuck with it forever and vice versa. Damon wants to neutralize the moonstone so it can’t be used at all, but before he can convince Slater to help him Elijah takes his pocketful of change and flings it at the shop windows, shattering them all and exposing our vamps to the sunlight. As Rose and Slater burn in agony, Damon and his magical protective ring look for Elijah but Eiljah is nowhere to be found.
Well, well. After a season and a half of missed connections and lame romantic opportunities, Bonnie’s got TWO fellas vying for her attention. As Jeremy obliviously shoots pool, Luka reveals that he and his dad are also magical witchy folk. Luka can make grains of salt levitate! He prefers the term “warlock.” It sounds more manly than witch or sorcerer or boy wizard.
Stefan finds Elena on her way out of the tomb after her tete-a-tete with Katherine. Stefan wants to protect her from the old evil sacrificin’ vampires, but Elena’s worried that he’ll die trying. Katherine emerges and tells Stefan that he can’t do anything to stop it, before launching into One. Final. Flashback. She reveals that when she tried to flee from Klaus, he retaliated by slaughtering her entire family, and he’ll do the same to Elena -- unless, of course, Katherine gives them the moonstone. Stefan accuses Katherine of lying about everything just to trade the stone for her own freedom, but the way she sees it, the enchanted tomb is the only hideout in Mystic Falls because no other vampire will enter it knowing they’ll be sealed inside. When Klaus comes to town and kills everyone, she smartly observes, “I’ll be the safest psychotic bitch in town.” Katherine retreats into the shadows as Stefan and Elena realize she’s right.
Back at home, Damon’s feeling the futility, too. Rose tells him he reminds her of Trevor because of his doomed sense of loyalty to Elena. They agree they’d both be better off not caring about anyone, and commence to hooking up.
Back at the Grill, Jeremy sees Bonnie deep in conversation with Luka and wonders how their first date got hijacked.
Stefan walks Elena to her front door, where she breaks down in tears. She’s even more upset now that she’s learned that all of her supernatural buddies will have to die to break the curse – and it’s all her fault. For existing. Or something. Inside the tomb, Katherine finds a drawing of her and her parents and tears well up in her undead eyes.
Newfound friends with benefits Rose and Damon chillax after having sex. She admits that after enough time spent as a vampire, you can no longer just shut off your emotions. Slater calls to say he doesn’t want to be involved in their plans, but tells her they can destroy the curse if they get a moonstone and a witch. Slater hangs up and we see that Elijah’s there with him, then we learn something new: Elijah somehow has the power to compel other vampires, which is how he got Slater to make the call – and how he gets poor Slater to stake himself.
But wait, there’s more! After Slater dies, an accomplice of Elijah’s enters the room. It’s DR. MADISON!! Is he being compelled by Elijah? Or is he Elijah’s personal warlock, like Bonnie is Elena’s and Lucy was Katherine’s? WHAT IS GOING ON, PEOPLE??
Rose
For an episode simply titled “Rose,” this week’s “Vampire Diaries” sure was complicated. The curse, the doppelganger, the doppelganger’s doppelganger, the sacrifice – tons of new details surfaced to flesh out the series’ next arc, but does anyone care about the new vampire baddies yet?
The problem is, Katherine was such a delicious villain that it’s hard to leave her locked in the tomb while other old school vampires step up to give Elena, Stefan, and Damon something to worry about. Elijah and his “Originals” might spice up Mystic Falls in the weeks to come, but tonight they just gave us a serious Twilight/”True Blood” vibe – a little bit of the Volturi mythos here, a dash of Russell the vampire king of Mississippi there.
That said, these greater vampire politics promise fascinating returns as we learn that the vampire world exists outside of Mystic Falls (as if!) and wonder how the Elena-as-sacrifice storyline will play out. Besides, what Delena fan could complain about an episode that sees Damon deliver the heartfelt admission we’ve been waiting for – and in the most heartbreaking way possible – while other unexpected couples stumble their way toward romance. (Bonneremy vs. Tyroline: Who makes the better pair?)

Elena’s mysterious kidnapper meets with a sunglasses-clad figure in the middle of nowhere. (AKA North Carolina.) He transports her into a car belonging to another mysterious baddie, who then bites him dead. Looks like there’s a new vampire in town!
Over at the Forbes home, Damon’s learning why Caroline was actually the right Mystic Falls teen to get turned into a vamp; she’s got a handle on everyone’s drama and covered for Tyler last week so that he wouldn’t have to reveal his supernatural status to his mom. She’s the perfect vampire social director/PR maven to keep things hush-hush in Mystic Falls! Damon warns Caroline not to buddy up with Tyler, because now that he’s a werewolf with the potential to kill vampires with a bite, he can’t be trusted.
Speaking of Tyler, we find him wandering the halls of Mystic High in a funk because everyone’s mourning Sarah and worrying about Aimee, whose body still hasn’t been found. (We also learn that we’ve been misspelling “Aimee” this whole time; “Stupid Dead Amy” is thusly corrected to “Stupid Dead Aimee” in our playbooks.) On edge, Tyler accidentally breaks his locker with his newfound super strength.
Jeremy runs into Stefan before class and the two realize that Elena’s missing. Cut to an old abandoned mansion straight out of Bon Temps, where new pretty vampire baddie guy named Trevor plops a frightened Elena onto a couch. A lady bloodsucker with a British accent and Kristen Stewart’s hair and wardrobe from The Runaways marvels at how much Elena looks like Katherine and backhands her into unconsciousness when Elena won’t stop asking questions.
Stefan confers with Damon about Elena and wonders if Katherine could be behind her disappearance. Damon insists that he shut Katherine in the tomb real good, but recalls her saying something about “the doppelganger.” Stefan wants to go to the tomb and ask Katherine for more information, but somehow that doesn’t sound like a great plan.
Tyler finds Caroline at school and asks how she knew that he was transforming last week at the masquerade, but Caroline feigns ignorance.
Elena wakes up from her bitch slap and overhears the two Eurovamps talking about someone named Elijah whom they plan on making a deal with in exchange for their freedom. Elena feebly attempts to sneak out, to no avail; there’s nothing around for miles, warns the vampire lady Rose, who tells Elena that Elijah is Elena’s worst nightmare.
Bonnie tells Stefan she can’t undo the tomb spell for him to give Katherine the freedom she’ll want in exchange for info on Elena’s whereabouts. But she has another bright idea: Why not use Jeremy’s Gilbert family blood to cast a finding spell on a map of Mystic Falls that’ll lead to where Elena’s being held? The magical spell points them 100 miles south to Reidsville, North Carolina, and you know what that means: ROAD TRIP! Damon volunteers to go with Stefan as Jeremy stays behind with Bonnie, who hides the fact that all that magic map work has made her nose start to bleed.
Over on the Mystic Falls High playground, Tyler’s playing a little pickup basketball. You know where this is going, dontcha? That’s right… TEEN WOLF, baby! Tyler discovers that he can dunk with his new wolfy hops – but ditches his mindblown classmates when he sees Caroline across the quad. He confronts her about lying to him, sensing that she knows something about his secret. When she denies knowing anything, Tyler grabs Caroline’s arm – and she deftly overpowers him. “You’re stronger than me?!” he asks. He begs her to tell him what’s going on because he can’t handle it all by himself, but she sticks to her story and watches, conflicted, as the tortured Tyler takes his frustration out on a poor defenseless trash can and walks off.
On the road, Stefan tries to buddy up and have real talk with Damon by asking him if he’s in love with Elena. Awkward! Back at home Jeremy’s demonstrating the amazing capabilities of his newfangled LG cellular telephone once again, which he uses to Bing or Google or whatever the aerial view of where they think Elena’s being held. He has another moment with Bonnie before Bonnie tries another magic spell requiring a candle, Elena’s hairbrush, and a crumpled up piece of paper. Bonnie’s the witchy MacGuyver of Mystic Falls! She manages to send a message to Elena in a puff of magical flame before collapsing with another nosebleed.
Elena, meanwhile, keeps pestering her Eurovamp captors. Rose admits that she has no personal interest in Elena; she’s just delivering her to Elijah. He’s one of THE vampires -- “The Originals.” Vampire History 101: Trevor and Rose have been on the lam for 500 years and they plan on using Elena to make amends for a past transgression, because she’s a “Petrova doppelganger” and thus the key to breaking the vampire/werewolf curse. We learn that the moonstone doesn’t break the curse, it only binds it. The only thing that breaks the curse is… THE BLOOD OF THE DOPPELGANGER!
Caroline comes home to find Tyler waiting for her. He thinks that she’s a werewolf and refuses to leave until she admits it. So tense is the moment that the “TVD” writers borrow a line from Twilight, albeit with a spin: “Say it!” Tyler demands. When Caroline laughs at the thought, Tyler flies into a rage and slams her against the wall. Caroline, in turn, throws Tyler to the ground and breaks out her vampire teeth, revealing herself.
Elena continues interrogating her kidnappers and learns that they’re running from “The Originals.” Because the name “The Volturi” was already taken. They’re an old-world family of vampires who’ve wanted Trevor and Rose dead because they helped Katherine, who herself was “the first Petrova doppelganger.” (If you’re playing along at home, this means that Katherine is someone else’s doppelganger and Elena is a doppelganger’s doppelganger.)
Back at the Gilbert house, Jeremy tends to a recovering Bonnie. She’s been doing a lot of magic lately! It’s not an addiction, she swears! Nosebleeds are just magic’s way of telling a witch to take a break. Preferably a break that involves a cute boy and his bedroom and no chaperones. Bonnie and Jeremy bond over being lonely teenagers and continue the new flirtation that begun last week.
Still in Alaric’s car, where they find a trove of anti-vampire weapons, Stefan reveals to Damon that he’s been slowly building up his tolerance for human blood by drinking a little bit each day. They share a blood bag and Damon wonders what happened to the Stefan who used to be a big bad bloodthirsty vamp.
“HE” has arrived – and Trevor is freaking out. Rose calms him down as they prepare to hand Elena over to the big bad vamp who has them shaking in their boots. The door to the mansion creaks open, a fresh-faced young man on the landing. It’s Elijah!
Rose nervously greets Elijah and tells him that Katherine survived the tomb in 1864, but he has already assumed that’s why he’s been summoned; he thinks Rose has info on Katherine’s whereabouts. Instead, Rose tells Elijah that she has Katherine’s doppelganger, which he thinks is impossible until he sniffs Elena up close and realizes it’s true.
The Brothers Salvatore arrive outside, not knowing what they’re in for but ready to die to save Elena. Inside the mansion, Elijah prepares to whisk Elena away to Volterra or wherever it is that he and the OG vampires live. But first, a little business: After Trevor apologizes for betraying Elijah way back when, Elijah forgives him. And then he swats off Trevor’s pretty little head. Elena stalls by trying to negotiate with Elijah, but he tears off her vervain necklace and compels her into revealing that the moonstone and Katherine are both locked in the tomb.
And then Stefan and Damon attack like ninjas, distracting Elijah while they whisk Elena and Rose to safety. Elena throws one of Alaric’s vervain grenades at Elijah’s head, but he quickly heals; Stefan attacks with a stake gun, but Elijah keeps coming like a horror movie villain. Stefan wrestles Elijah down a flight of stairs and as Elijah recovers, Damon impales him on the front door with a coat rack. Damon turns to receive his hero moment as a relieved and grateful Elena runs down the stairs … and straight into Stefan’s arms. As disappointment flickers across Damon’s face, Elena mouths a silent thank you to him. Aww, Damon totally hearts Elena! And she knows it as much as we do.
Elena comes home to a teary reunion with Jeremy and Bonnie. Stefan comes home to a scotch-drinking Damon. Knowing now that unknown vampires might try to come for Elena and sacrifice her as the doppelganger, Stefan and Damon agree to protect her together. Stefan apologizes for making Damon go vampire way back then just so he wouldn’t have to be alone and leaves Damon alone with his thoughts and his alcohol.
Also having a heart-to-heart over booze are Caroline and Tyler. They trade notes on being newborns in their respective supernatural species, but Caroline leaves out the part about there being other vampires. He admits he’s scared of changing on the next full moon, and Caroline pulls him into a hug. Could this be the beginning of a beautiful werewolf-vampire friendship?
Rose pays Stefan a visit at home; now that Trevor’s dead, she’s got nowhere else to go. Rose offers her help to Stefan and Damon because even with Elijah dead, the rest of The Originals will be coming for Elena to give her to another new-old dude named Klaus.
Meanwhile, Damon pays Elena a visit at home before she goes to sleep. He returns her vervain necklace, but must get something off his chest first. Damon tells Elena that he loves her – but that Stefan is the one who deserves her. Before Elena can react, Damon compels her to forget as a single tear rolls down his pretty vampire cheek. In a flash he’s gone and Elena is left standing in her bedroom with the window open, her vervain necklace back around her neck. She sits, puzzled, as if she knows something just happened but can’t quite put her finger on it.
But Damon’s got another kind of trouble to worry about, because back in The Middle of Nowhere, North Carolina, Dead Elijah suddenly comes back to life and un-impales himself from the mansion door. And he looks pissed.
